چکیده

We describe SVIFT – an eyes-free text-entry technique for mobile touch devices to increase speed and accuracy while enabling fast learning and easy adoption. The technique involves expanding the text-entry mode to a full screen format and innovating over the old-style T9 and telephone pad design. It makes use of multiple input and feedback interactions – swipe, pause, circle, hand-waving, audio and vibrotactile. A preliminary evaluation of two telephone pad based T9 prediction schemes found temporal speed and accuracy improvements in Svift.

Tracking ensemble performance on touch-screens with gesture classification and transition matrices

We present and evaluate a novel interface for tracking ensemble performances on touch-screens. The system uses a Random Forest classifier to extract touch-screen gestures and transition matrix statistics. It analyses the resulting gesture-state sequences across an ensemble of performers. A series of specially designed iPad apps respond to this real-time analysis of free-form gestural performanc...

Pickup Usability Dominates: A Brief History of Mobile Text Entry Research and Adoption

Text entry on mobile devices (e.g. phones and PDAs) has been a research challenge since devices shrank below laptop size: mobile devices are simply too small to have a traditional full-size keyboard. There has been a profusion of research into text entry techniques for smaller keyboards and touch screens: some of which have become mainstream, while others have not lived up to early expectations...

BrailleType: Unleashing Braille over Touch Screen Mobile Phones

The emergence of touch screen devices poses a new set of challenges regarding text-entry. These are more obvious when considering blind people, as touch screens lack the tactile feedback they are used to when interacting with devices. The available solutions to enable non-visual text-entry resort to a wide set of targets, complex interaction techniques or unfamiliar layouts. We propose BrailleT...

Escape-Keyboard: A Sight-Free One-Handed Text Entry Method for Mobile Touch-screen Devices

Mobile text entry methods traditionally have been designed with the assumption that users can devote full visual and mental attention on the device, though this is not always possible. The authors present their iterative design and evaluation of Escape-Keyboard, a sight-free text entry method for mobile touch-screen devices. Escape-Keyboard allows the user to type letters with one hand by press...

A Thumb Stroke-Based Virtual Keyboard for Sight-Free Text Entry on Touch-Screen Mobile Phones

The use of QWERTY on most of the current mobile devices for text entry usually requires users’ full visual attention and both hands, which is not always possible due to situational or physical impairments of users. Prior research has shown that users prefer to hold and interact with a mobile device with a single hand when possible, which is challenging and poorly supported by current mobile dev...
